Be Fire with Fire
Imperialists are obviously not up to the task when it comes to fighting al Qaeda and its ilk. Nor are international leftists, no matter how many tracts against imperialism and Islamism they publish. One, the threat of Al Qaeda as something unified and capable is largely the result of US propaganda.
Two, this Hamas vs. AQ or Sunni Resistance vs. AQ stuff is also largely the creation of the US and all its propaganda purposes.
Any sort of united Islam that is anti-US scares the shit out of the Americans. Just as it did the British, who spent so many years helping to create forms of Wahabbism and Deobandism that they could manipulate.
